The current workaround is to break up your solution into smaller packages. I'm not sure why someone would be editing the object you are importing - projects should be managed so that objects editing is planed and controlled, and your lots of small objects rather than one large one should reduce that risk. If you are importing a release from a development environment into test or production then no one should be able to make edits in your higher environments.
