You need to use region editor (one of the editor modes) which is used for surface automation.  While you are spying, use Alt button for switching between editors. But just about any application will do, the whole point of SA is that it is (almost) universally applicable. Font-smoothing has to be disabled for reading text, and things like gradient colours, scrolling, tables and truncated fields are common challenges.
