How do Blue prism licensing works?

Can you please explain how blueprism licensing actually works on processes. Is it per process 1 license or per robot 1 license. Is the no. of licensing afftected by concurrent session run of same process on same VM?

Hi Sapna,
It usually is 1 License a Robot which includes Database, AppServer and n number of Debug VM's connected.
Concurrent Session runs are being run on the same Robot?

Yes concurrent sessions running on same robot. If there are multiple sessions running on the same robot, considering scenario 1 - all the session are being run by same process(that process is having background mode) or scenario 2 - all the session are being run by diff process(all processes having background mode), only one license will be consumed by that robot?

Look in Control Room at the number of sessions that are concurrently running. It doesn't matter which process it is or which runtime resource(s) is being used. The license consumption/limitation is purely calculated by adding up the total number of sessions that are active in some way, which includes pending, running, warning, stopping, etc. So, basically all sessions that are other than Completed, Terminated, or Stopped are counted up and that's the license usage.

If you have 1 runtime resource running 2 sessions, then that's 2 "licenses" consumed. If you have 2 runtime resources running 1 session each, then that's 2 licenses consumed. If you have 2 runtime resources with 2 sessions each, then that's 4 licenses consumed.

Thanks Dave, Can you please help me understand it with below example & its explanation.

If i am having 3 process A,B & C

One instance of the 'A process' will run 24/7
Three instances of the 'B process' will run between 2 am & 9 pm each day on three separate VM's
One instance of the C process will run b/w 2 am & 3 pm each day on the same VM as A process

max no. of BP license consumed each day will be how much?

Max number will be 5 sessions/licenses consumed.

9 p.m. to 2 a.m.: 1 license
2 a.m. to 3 p.m.: 5 licenses
3 p.m. to 9 p.m.: 4 licenses

Hi there,

Excellent question. Licensing in Blue prism breaks down into 4 major components; Processes, Sessions, Resources, and Alerts. Most commonly you'll hear people refer to it in terms of Robots, when in fact they are referring to Sessions. A session is an instance of a process performing work on a Runtime Resource. When you schedule a Runtime Resource to perform work with blue prism, it will consume a session on the license and not release it until the work has been stopped or completed. Often when you hear someone reference "10 licenses" it means that 10 concurrent sessions can be executed. Processes refers to how many Published processes are available in the control room. Resources refers to how many runtime resources can be connected in the envrionment, and Alerts are how many concurrent session alerts can be seen.

Let's take a quick example of sessions in progress. We are just starting out on our automation journey, and have a pilot of 1 process critical to the business that will run monday through friday 9-5 for now. We have purchased licensing for 10 sessions for the year, which means that at most we can run our process up to 10 times simultaneously across our Digital Workforce. In this example, that might mean that 10 runtime resources begin the work of our process at 9am every day, consuming all 10 sessions until 5pm, opening those back up for other work or processes to be done.

The maximum number of sessions your license can support is determined by your licensing agreement. For more information on costs and navigating that agreement, I would reach out to a partner or sales representative.
