The Journey from Learner to Certified Developer at Blue Prism University

Read the captivating story about how I, Vijay Alagarsamy, became a certified developer from knowing nothing about RPA. This is not just a story of my certification. It’s a roadmap for learners and educators alike on how to make the most of what Blue Prism University has to offer.

When I began my journey in the automation space, I didn’t know how far it would take me, or how much I would grow along the way. I came from a non-automation background, filled with a passion for learning but unsure how to begin. My curiosity pointed me toward Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and soon I found myself exploring Blue Prism University.

Back then, I was just a learner. Today, I contribute to learning itself, as a Curriculum Developer creating meaningful, structured, and effective content for others who stand where I once stood. This is not just a story of my certification. It’s a roadmap for learners and educators alike on how to make the most of what Blue Prism University has to offer.

Discovering Blue Prism University

My first interaction with Blue Prism University was refreshing. While other platforms made assumptions about prior knowledge, Blue Prism welcomed learners from all walks of life. It was like being invited into a space that said, “We’ll meet you where you are.”

The Blue Prism Foundation Course laid the groundwork, introducing me to core concepts like objects, processes, queues, and control room features. The structure was intuitive, the flow logic was clear, and the explanations were all clear without being oversimplified. But the real differentiator? Application-based learning. Every module gave me a chance to practice, not just read along.

The Consolidation Exercises were especially game changers. I remember the first time I worked through the Advanced Consolidation activity - I had to pause, think, retry, and reflect. It was challenging, but never frustrating. The activity guides, the examples, the troubleshooting—all felt like they were built with me in mind. And when I completed it? The confidence boost was real.

My Personal Strategy

Beyond watching videos and following guides, I developed a structured learning system to make the most of my time and ensure long-term retention. Here's what worked for me:

1. Active Notetaking

Throughout the course, I maintained dedicated notes for each module—not just summaries but highlights of why something works the way it does, how different stages interact, and common use cases. These became my go-to resource when troubleshooting or revising.

2. Cheat Sheets

I created custom cheat sheets covering:

  • Exception types
  • Common stages and their functions
  • Data types and data formats
  • Special characters and best practices for input validation
  • Environmental variables, collections, and looping mechanisms

These one-pagers served as rapid references and helped me immensely during practice exercises and mock tests.

3. Mind Mapping

Mind mapping helped me visualize relationships between concepts, such as how the Object Studio connects with Process Studio, or how scheduling, logging, and control room components interact.

Becoming a Blue Prism Certified Developer

Taking the Developer Certification was more than just passing an exam. It was a moment of validation - proof that the hours spent learning, practicing, and reflecting were worth it. The certification opened doors and enhanced my credibility in the field. But more importantly, it shaped my mindset about how learning in technology should happen.

Today, I design content for technical learners. I understand their challenges because I’ve lived through them. When I build courses or design labs, I remember what helped me most and what made me struggle. That’s what drives me to make content meaningful, practical, and, above all, empowering.

From Learner to Developer, from Developer to Educator

As a Curriculum Developer, I now view Blue Prism University not just through the eyes of a learner, but through the lens of someone who builds content for learners. Here’s what I believe Blue Prism University gets right, and why it matters:

1. Structured Learning Paths, Clear Outcomes

Whether you're training to become an Automation Developer or a Solution Designer or exploring the ROM2 framework, every learning path has been thoughtfully designed. Each module builds on the previous, and every outcome is tied to a real-world task.

2. Hands-On Exercises & Guided Learning

One of the most powerful elements of Blue Prism’s content is its scaffolding. Learners are not thrown into the deep end. Instead, they are gradually guided from concept to application through:

  • Step-by-step walkthroughs
  • Interactive practice environments
  • Consolidation exercises that simulate real use cases
  • Downloadable resources and documentation

As someone who trains others, I cannot overstate the importance of this guided structure. It not only builds skills but reinforces them.

3. Certifications That Hold Value

Blue Prism offers a clear roadmap from Developer Certification to ROM Architect, Professional Developer,  and more. Each certification has a recognized value in the industry and follows a logical upskilling progression.

And it’s not just about technical exams. Certifications like the Blue Prism ROM2 Professional or Solution Designer highlight that automation isn't just for coders… It’s also for thinkers, planners, and strategists too.

4. Global Community & Learning Culture

Beyond the content, Blue Prism fosters a culture of community learning. Whether through forums, webinars, or hackathons, learners have constant access to real-time feedback and peer interaction.

As someone who has delivered webinars, ILTs, and designed partner content, I believe that these real-world interactions often bridge the final learning gap. Learners don’t just want to study; they want to connect.

Advice for Aspiring RPA Learners

If you’re considering Blue Prism Intelligent Automation as a career, here’s what I suggest, based on both experience and pedagogy:

  • Start slow but be consistent. Focus on the foundations before rushing into certifications.
  • Practice as much as possible. Use the sandbox environments. Redo exercises.
  • Take notes - don’t rely solely on memory.
  • Build your own cheat sheets - they’ll save you time.
  • Explore the “why” behind automation. Understanding the business context helps you build better digital workers.
  • Get certified when you’re ready. Not to decorate your resume, but to validate your skills.
  • Join the community. Attend sessions, ask questions, help others, learn, and grow.

Why This Journey Matters

The beauty of Blue Prism University is not just in the content, but in the way it treats learners. It’s a learning ecosystem that respects your time, adapts to your pace, and supports your growth. It builds, supports, and celebrates your progress.

From someone who once opened the Foundation course with zero automation experience, to now building ILT and eLearning content for global learners - this has been a full-circle moment.
