Exposed Process as Web Service Results Unauthorized with Basic Auth header provided

I am trying to call the web service for an Exposed Process using Basic Authentication credentials in the header.  However despite providing valid credentials in header "Authorization: Basic *************", (I removed the actual credentials for purposes of posting here),  the results are always 401 Unauthorized.
Does anything need to be configured in BP to support Basic Authentication for exposed processes?
Could having BP setup to use Active Directory SSO login when starting Automate.exe be the cause?
Can the exposed services support other authentication methods?
