I'm one of the resident Process Intelligence experts, and after working with 100+ customers and partners using the tool, I have some takeaways I'd like to share with the Process Intelligence community. Feel free to ask any questions in this thread as you read! 🚀
Overview
Today, I want to showcase the top 5 tools that I find invaluable for when you first get your hands on process mining data. These tools have helped me identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and process conformance issues in a wide range of processes. I like these particular tools because with very little effort and time, I get a good grasp on what is going on and where I should focus my investigation next and ultimately identify areas for improvement. Let's let the tool to do the work!
You'll see as I go through the tools below, there are links to online documentation if you want to dive even deeper–just click on the tool name for the documentation to open. Click on the photos to see an animation of the tool in action.
Let's start with the Process View tool. This tool allows you to see the entire schema of your process, giving you a bird's eye view of how everything fits together. We get to see the major milestones, that occur in the business process, called an event in Process Intelligence speak.
By understanding the big picture, you can identify any major inefficiencies that need to be addressed, or visualize the most common path(s) or sequences of events that occur.
This tool is particularly useful for understanding how your process interacts comes into contact with different systems or departments within your organization, and actual effect on the cases passing through the business process. We call these cases Timelines in Process Intelligence speak.
🛑 Bottleneck Tool 🛑
Now, let's move onto the Bottleneck Tool. This tool is perfect for identifying bottlenecks in your process and pinpointing areas that need improvement. By identifying the bottleneck, you can take targeted action to fix the issue and improve the efficiency of your process.
According to much of the process mining literature, bottlenecks are one of the most important things to focus on when analyzing a process. By addressing bottlenecks, you can reduce wait times, improve throughput, and ultimately improve the customer and employee experience, further reducing costs and increasing revenue.
🕰️ Interval Tool 🕰️
Next up is the Interval Tool. This tool allows you to take a closer look at a specific bottleneck and analyze it in greater detail. By understanding the root cause of the bottleneck, you can develop targeted solutions to fix the issue. This tool is particularly useful for complex processes where there are multiple bottlenecks that need to be addressed.
📝 Protocol Tool 📝
Moving on to the Protocol Tool, this tool is all about highlighting any process conformance issues that might be present. By identifying where your process deviates from its intended path, you can take corrective action to get things back on track. This tool is particularly useful for identifying any compliance issues within your process. By ensuring that your process is compliant, you can reduce the risk of penalties and fines, or costly deviations.
Alongside a subject matter expert familiar with the business process, simply configure the process map that represents the ideal, and "Show Violations" to see which violations occur, and you can apply that violation as a filter to continue drilling deeper.
💥 Breakdown Tool 💥
Last but not least, we have the Breakdown Tool. This tool is perfect for digging deeper into any issues that you might have detected with the other tools. By understanding the root cause of any issues, you can develop targeted solutions to fix the issue once and for all. This tool is particularly useful for identifying any systemic issues within your process that need to be addressed. After zooming in on anything I find suspicious using one of my tools, this is often one of the first tools I use to see if there are trends associated with that data.
