Hi Sam,

The context is not pretty much clear that where you actually you found such an expression. But just looking at it, it seems that we are trying to enforce some kind of a logic to check the presence of '*' around the current date field out of the entire timestamp field. Also, two times here * is used so that it can be escaped 

Suppose you have a date like *10-10-2020 * 8:35:00, then here to identify the character '*' , the expression seems to be that way.

For more details, would request you shed more light on the context where this expression is being used.
