Ever since the term Robotic Process Automation (RPA) was coined (by Blue Prism), the focus amongst enterprises has rightly been on figuring how this technology can help deliver business benefits through some new levers which until then were unknown. What interested businesses was the fact that RPA could be driven with little support from IT and that it could sit on top of existing systems and processes not requiring any prerequisites for deployment. That it delivered accelerated RoI in weeks and months than years just sweetened it further!
In the last few years, most organizations have moved well to and made some good progress in enabling an RPA mandate. Like any good thing in life, RPA came with challenges: more around governance and the ability of the organizations to orchestrate itself to reap benefits from this new technology. That does not mean that technical and operational aspects are not relevant but just that most often the more difficult issues to overcome are around organizational inertia and driving collaboration across key stakeholders.
In my experience working with several clients in various stages of maturity of their intelligent automation journey, a very similar program moves much faster when there is strong executive sponsor who has the vision and can steamroll initial resistance till the RPA program acquires a critical mass, at which point it is a rolling juggernaut. Once such a steer is set, there are the relatively easier frontiers to ensure there is a right level of enablement, roles, technology and support to ensure a well-managed delivery of automation driven transformation.
These and a lot of other scenarios are addressed by effectively implementing Blue Prism’s Robotic Operating Model (ROM). The ROM brings a strong foundation which covers right from the corner office (Vision) to the control room (Service Model). This provides various levels of understanding across an organization, a common denominator that brings forth, what matters most for success: sharp and crystallized. The seven foundations of the ROM are:
- Vision
- Organization
- Governance and Pipeline
- Delivery Methodology
- Service Model
- People
- Technology
A ROM review/assessment is relevant at various stages of the RPA maturity model. What works in cruise mode will not work in a take-off phase. Hence, a lot of enterprises have gained by going for an RPA Assessment to ensure they are moving within the guardrails of the Robotic Operating Model. Read more about ROM here.
