Decipher Maintenance

Hi ,
Have couple of Basic question of Maintaining Decipher environment.

1. If i need to upgrade Rabbit MQ/Erlang, do i need to install all the related services (Decipher Licensing service, decipher server) . I faced a similar issue where for some reason i had to reinstall Rabbit MQ, but post reinstall Decipher server stopped working and it worked only after I installed Decipher server again

2. When we install Decipher server, there is an option to provide DECIPHER DB name. I created DB before hand and then when I tried providing DB name it said that the DB already exists. So looks like the installation will only work if the DB name that we provide is a new DB. Is my understanding correct?

Thanks

Hi Sandeep,

1. You shouldn't have to reinstall things. You will just need to restart the services in this order: Licensing, Server, Web Client. If you were needing to reinstall anything, I would think you would only need to reinstall the Decipher server and reboot your systems.

2. That is correct. The current version of Decipher does not allow you to install Decipher to a pre-created database. Decipher will have to create a new database itself during the installation.

Hi Gabe ,
As per decipher installation video help, I installed rabbit MQ 3.18.4 in the server. However my company security team has asked me to move to the latest version of Rabbit MQ. This is the reason I am looking for a reinstall of RabbitMQ.

However the only time I did this previously, decipher server stopped working and I ended up dropping my database and reinstalling Decipher server also.  So the question was to clarify if RabbitMQ can be reinstalled without impacting Decipher Server?

Thanks

Hi Sandeep,

RabbitMQ is bundled as part of the 1.1 server installation and I don't believe it was supported with later version.

However, in 1.2 we have removed the RabbitMQ install and this is now done prior to the Decipher install. I believe we have tested with v3.8.17, though the latest release is 3.8.19 (this was not available at the time of testing).

The installation was separated to help this scenario, enabling you to keep up to date. As with all upgrades beyond our tested version, please create a backup point.

Decipher 1.2 is due imminently.

Thanks

Hi Ben ,
I am installing 1.2 only.  However i am still not clear on what needs to be done if Just RabbitMQ needs to be upgraded.
Do we need to uninstall/install all Decipher components also?  I tried to upgrade RabbitMQ once and at that time, Decipher server stopped working and i had to reinstall Decipher server to make it work. If we need to reinstall everything then that's a concern as the Decipher server installation does not allow me to use an existing DB and i would need to drop the database. Just wanted to confirm the recommended scenario and i will try to follow that path.

Thanks

Hi Sandeep,

I've checked with our architecture team and they've advised you should be able to upgrade RabbitMQ without it impacting your Decipher install. Though as I mentioned we haven't tested the latest 2 releases.

They added that if you are using a multi machine environment with Decipher Server on a separate machine from the Web Client and RabbitMQ, you will need to create (and user) a credential other than the default guest option.

So long as your credentials remain the same, it should work.

Thanks

Thanks Ben. I was able to successfully upgrade Rabbit MQ without impacting Decipher  components. I believe last time i tried to uninstall RabbitMQ and then upgrade which caused the issue. As long as we just upgrade as is, seems like it works.
