Just a quick update on this in case other people face the same issue There's an obscure setting within the Windows 10 'Advanced Display Settings' under 'Advanced Sizing of Text And Other Items' then 'Set a Custom Scaling Level'.

Both font smoothing and cleartype are off on my pc.
Reducing the search text does not help.
