Best practices to be followed while upgrading to new version

Hi Team,

We are planning to upgrade from the current version of 5.0.33 to 6.7 at my workplace.

Please guide on the best practices we should follow while doing so.

I searched for few similar thread however the links pointed there seems to have gone stale.

Any help on this will be much appreciated.
