Expert Insights From the Judges

The Power of storytelling in your submission

Owen Kimber, Director, Sales Enablement, SS&C Blue Prism, and 2025 judge.

“Storytelling is a powerful tool, as it helps build connections, simplify complex ideas and makes your submission more memorable. Maybe you feel that your submission is not based on using a lot of sophisticated capabilities, or you don’t have many data points. Telling a story is absolutely key to providing an emotional connection for the reader, as they will relate to the problem you faced and how solving the problem makes you feel. It helps you build credibility and trust. Here are some tips on components to include in your story:

  • What was the pain your business was feeling? What was the implication of that pain on your business?
  • What compelled your business to want to overcome that pain?
  • What did the solution look like?
  • What impact did the solution have? Ideally, you want to include some business metrics to increase the sense of impact.
  • What was the outcome? How did it make you and your business feel? Use testimonials. This is where you can gain an emotional connection with your reader and make it memorable.”

Balancing Innovation and Measurable Outcomes

Emma Kirby-Kidd, Head of Methodologies, SS&C Blue Prism, and 2025 judge

“When reviewing entries, both innovation and measurable benefits are equally important, but in different ways. Innovation in automation is exciting because it enables new and exciting opportunities, transforms ways of working and provides customer satisfaction. But for it to really stand out, it also needs to deliver real, measurable value.

I try to balance the two by looking at how creative or transformative an idea is, alongside the impact it’s actually having. If something is highly innovative but doesn’t yet have strong results, I consider its potential. On the other hand, if an entry has solid benefits but isn’t particularly new, I assess whether it’s still driving meaningful change. The best entries find that sweet spot — smart automation that’s both innovative and clearly making a difference.”

The Role of Collaboration in a Winning Entry

Owen Kimber, Director, Sales Enablement, SS&C Blue Prism, and 2025 judge.

“The best submissions are those which describe a business that has been transformed using intelligent automation capabilities. True transformation requires a change in people and processes as well as technology, and to achieve that, you are dependent on collaboration. Here are some of the ways that collaboration can shine in your entry:

  • Different teams bring diverse perspectives, leading to the most creative ideas.
  • Collaboration will enable different teams in your organization to have a shared vision and goal for the transformation.
  • Collaboration boosts employee ownership which means your solution is likely to be adopted faster.
  • True innovation relies on the alignment of many technology parts.”

What Makes an Entry Stand Out Immediately?

Emma Kirby-Kidd, Head of Methodologies, SS&C Blue Prism, and 2025 judge

“For me, it’s less about big numbers and more about real change and adoption within the organization. Yes, the big benefits are very impressive and absolutely should be celebrated, but not all organizations can achieve the same large benefits as others. This doesn’t mean they haven’t achieved transformation — it means they have achieved transformation relative to their sized organization. So, an entry stands out when I can see there has been change/transformation in the organization and your people are passionate about what they are achieving.”

Advice for Entrants Who Feel Their Achievements Are Too Small or Niche

Emma Kirby-Kidd, Head of Methodologies, SS&C Blue Prism, and 2025 judge

“Personally, these are the ones that stand out to me more! I love seeing how creative organizations are when using our products! The more creative, niche or transformative, the better for the judges to read. In my five years of judging, I still get surprised at just how organizations are finding new ways to deliver.
So please submit your best achievements proudly! We love to read them. And remember — there’s no such thing as “too small” or “too niche”. It’s not about benchmarking the size of the automation or organization; it’s about how you made a difference to your organization using automation.”
