Spying an Canvas Element in a web based application

I have a web application which has a canvas element in it. I am unable to spy the canvas element as the canvas element has the greater stack order when compared to div element. Could you guys please suggest me some ideas on this

Thanks for the update John i did go through it, However just wanted know if there is any other option available other than using Surface Automation as i feel at one point it may fail while updating the columns in it

If we introduce a hidden element is it possible for us to spy and capture using the id of the hidden element ?
